Looking at Aquaponics

Im having a nose around the net for aquqponics systems with the idea of having a growing and fish/ possibly eel system.  I have no idea if its legal,  where to get the fry etc, so at this stage I'm having a look.  At the PRI Australia there is an aquaponics system in the urban garden.  I don't know the fish that would work in NZ.  I don't know if anyone is already doing it here, so if any of you guys know

Hi Donna

I've been interested in aquaponics for some time, but keep hitting deadends as far as fish we could actually use. It's illegal to have tilapia in NZ, unfortunately as they're perfect for this. There's a breed of carp that is bred and released in NZ, but illegal to have. There's a group in Whanganui setting up an aquaponics system, but they were planning to start with goldfish (not to eat) as that's the only thing they could think of.

I'd be very interested to hear if you make any progress with this. Talking to MAF might be the next step. It really shouldn't be so difficult considering they'd be in a contained, isolated system!

Ok, looking further, I came across the aquaponics trial in Motueka, which has been successful over the last couple of years. They've grown carp (with govt permits) and are now trying salmon. See: http://www.berrysmith.org/news/aquaponics-trial-officially-handed-over, and for the original plan: http://www.berrysmith.org/projects/aquaponic-ventures-ltd

Hmmm...definitely worth further investigating - the trick would be to set something up without mega$$$

Def reckon its worth investigating @ Cynthia, I would love to have eels. I don't reckon it'd be that hard, people used to put them in water tanks to clean up the flies etc. Salmon and carp would be good too tho. Love the whole concept behind the Berry Smith foundation- we'll have to keep up to date with their stuff eh. Thanks for showing us that
